Frequently asked questions about tallow balm and skin care with tallow
Do you have questions about our products, tallow balm or skin care with tallow? Here we have collected answers to the most common questions we receive – from shelf life and use to ingredients and storage. We believe in transparent, natural skin care without additives – and are happy to share our knowledge!
We always use exactly the same recipe in our production. The main ingredient, kidney tallow, is a completely natural and unprocessed product. It can look a little different in different batches and from different animals. These are factors we cannot influence without chemical additives. We do not want to use additives in order to preserve the nourishing properties of the tallow. Depending on the temperature in the environment, the cream can sometimes become grainy, but this disappears as soon as you apply it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, it is that the tallow crystallizes in relation to the olive oil, which can disappear if it is allowed to stand a little warmer.
During colder months, the sebum will usually be harder in consistency. During the summer and in warmer climates, it will be softer. If you take a jar outside in the cold, it will be quite hard. Feel free to take the cream with a spatula and soften it between your hands before applying it. A spatula or spoon also keeps unwanted bacteria and dirt away from the jar.
We lightly whisk our cream to give it a slightly creamier consistency than a harder ointment.
We are very much against having to add or in any way destroy the natural consistency of the cream at the expense of its nutritional content and effect.
The shelf life is set at 6 months but often the tallow lasts for 12 months. If it is refrigerated, the shelf life can be much longer. We have set 6 months as we notice that the ethereal scent can fade at that time.
Shelf life can also be affected by light, oxygen, heat and added impurities. We recommend that you remove the cream from the jar with a clean spatula or spoon and store the cream with the lid on and avoid getting water in the jar.
Store the jar at room temperature but not in direct sunlight. Keep the lid on and apply preferably with a spatula/spoon to avoid impurities in the jar.
Even if the scent fades over time, the sebum is completely normal.
Tallow, like olive oil, can be stored at room temperature. It has the type of fat that cannot oxidize and thus go bad. Avoid direct sunlight. Make sure to keep the lid on to avoid dirt in the jar. Also, take the cream out of the jar with a spatula or spoon to avoid dirt and bacteria from your fingers.
We have a 6 month shelf life mostly because the scent fades. Tallow can be stored for 12 months and even longer if it is kept cooler. In the refrigerator it can last for a couple of years but then it also becomes hard in consistency.
Sebum-based skin cream can help normalize all skin types (oily, dry, combination, etc.) and provides an effective emollient effect. Based on science, users testify that it is helpful and very moisturizing for extra dry skin, even with eczema and psoriasis. It is also considered helpful for acne.
As it is water-free, it is a suitable cream when you are outdoors during the winter. It provides a protective effect against the cold while retaining moisture. It is effective for sunburned skin and is an effective moisturizer after a day in the sun.
Just as the name describes "Head to toe", we use the same recipe for the cream that can be used for the whole body. The skin is the same all over the body even if it is exposed to a little more stress such as on the hands and face.
Apply as needed, preferably after a shower or bath. Massage a small amount between your hands and apply to the entire body.
Our whipped version may be easier to apply to the face, especially at colder temperatures when the cream can become harder in consistency.
Sebum is natural and comes with a natural scent. It is therefore not completely fragrance-free. To achieve completely fragrance-free skin care, chemical additives are required. We strive for as natural and fresh skin care as possible without additives or chemical treatment.
Our natural cream, which has no added essential aroma, is not completely fragrance-free. It has a milder natural scent of both the tallow and the olive oil. It varies from jar to jar, or rather from batch to batch of tallow.
However, the natural scent will vaporize not long after application thanks to the optimal absorption of sebum into our skin.
Yes! Sebum is almost identical to our own skin (read more in our section ABOUT SEBUM) and is ideal for children's sensitive skin. Our cream without essential oil, i.e. "Natural", is recommended for children.
Lavender is usually said to be safe for use by children in small doses and has a calming effect, but we only recommend our natural balm even though we use a minimal amount of the fragrances.
The natural one is emollient for small red diaper rash and children's dry patches. Personally, we have used tallow for children's skin and on molluscum. We also use tallow for sunburn and skin that has been exposed to a little extra sun or cold.
No. Tallow is a product from cattle and therefore not vegan.
We believe in using raw materials from animals that have grazed freely and eaten only grass and silage. Our tallow comes from certified farms with high standards for animal husbandry. We believe in minimizing waste and tallow is today "waste" at slaughter. We therefore take our responsibility and create value from something that in modern times is thrown away.
The animals are unique and so is the tallow. The cream can differ in color accordingly - sometimes a little whiter, sometimes more yellow. That is the natural color of the tallow. Most of our cream consists of tallow and then a smaller part of organic cold-pressed olive oil. The olive oil also has a faint greenish-yellow color.
The tallow comes from grass-fed, certified Swedish animals. We only use kidney tallow, which is harder in consistency and very nutritious with a high proportion of nourishing fatty acids.
We render, that is, produce and purify the tallow ourselves in our own manufacturing facility. We use a traditional method completely without chemical additives.
In addition to its high nutritional content, our tallow is classified as an organically certified food and is therefore very safe.
Glass is something we can reuse. We also thought it fit in. It is a bit heavy compared to plastic but we, like others, want to take our responsibility and minimize plastic. Our aluminum cans are also recyclable and approved for cosmetics.
Both the uncolored glass and the Bakelite lids can be recycled.
Essential oils can also affect the breakdown of plastic over time, and we don't want to risk that with our products. For your health and for the environment.
We appreciate your feedback on packaging and please contact us with suggestions!
